How to hack RFID-enabled Credit Cards for $8 (BBtv)
Posted by admin
A number of credit card companies now issue credit cards with embedded RFIDs (radio frequency ID tags), with promises of enhanced security and speedy transactions.
But on today’s episode of Boing Boing tv, hacker and inventor Pablos Holman shows Xeni how you can use about $8 worth of gear bought on eBay to read personal data from those credit cards — cardholder name, credit card number, and whatever else your bank embeds in this manner.
Fears over data leaks from RFID-enabled cards aren’t new, and some argue they’re overblown — but this demo shows just how cheap and easy the “sniffing” can be.
This episode is part of our ongoing series of interviews with some of the thinkers, hackers, and tinkerers at the O’Reilly Emerging Technology conference this year.

Chase tried to foist one of those chipped cards on me.
Since my existing non-chipped card is valid for 2 more years, I decided to cut up the chipped card and stick the pieces in the microwave. Made a nice fireworks show complete with sound effects. Bye bye chip.
Called up Chase and told them never to send me a chipped card again. Also said if the only choice is a chipped card when my old card expires, then I will close my account

Good point. I have had many times that my bank has made it difficult to remove large chunks under some “security” excuse.

What a lot of …
What a lot of criminals do is get a job as a cashier and keep a portable magnetic strip reader writer at the register. When someone hands them a card they first scan it on the portable read(maybe under the counter) and then on the actual reader for the store. They then go home and apply for similar credit cards and when they receive them in the mail they replace the data with your’s, thereby having charging from you’re account without your knowledge.

This means that if …
This means that if a bank has $1000 from people’s savings — they loan out $1200 to other people to buy houses or cars or boats, etc. So, if everyone who put in their $1000 savings wanted to close their accounts — it couldn’t be done — because the bank loaned that money out AND MORE!!! You can see this in “It’s A Wonderful Life” when George Bailey explains to someone who wants his money from the Bailey Savings and Loan that his money is in his neighbor’s house –

Hi rahmega7,
…
Hi rahmega7,
Speaking of “doing your history” up until 1913 people were doing a great job saving money and the banks were not happy because they weren’t making much money. There was plenty of money in people’s savings and as you mentioned the “fractional reserve banking” was put into practice yet. So when the Federal Reserve Banking System took over, the “fractional reserve” banking system was put into practice.

It is against the …
It is against the Constitution to have paper money! The Congress is given the right to print it’s own COIN money by the Constitution! But, the Federal Reserve prints paper money and under Nixon (I believe) the base of that money was NO LONGER GOLD!! So our useless, valueless paper money is based on NOTHING! The Federal Reserve Chairman decides how much more to print — which further devalues our currency! It’s basically toilet paper!

Our Founding …
Our Founding Fathers made sure that the only ones who could mint COIN based money in our country was CONGRESS and then in 1913 that was taken away and given to a private group of bankers — not even a government agency! And our government BORROWS money from private citizens and pays HUGE interest on the loans! Then they can’t pay the amount due back, so they have to borrow MORE, and on and on and on!

You have certainly …
You have certainly done your homework, rahmega7!
Also, the “Federal Reserve Bank” is NOT an agency of the Federal government, as the name implies — it is a Banking Cartel — just like a DRUG Cartel — a bunch of crooks trying to insure that no one else gets in and gets a “slice of the pie”! One of the worst things to happen was the formation of the Federal Reserve Banking System in 1913.

I exchange goods/ …
I exchange goods/services for same, without funding the horror of banking systems or dictatorship~ there are ways around the what we expect as everyday life, yet we must be inventive to exist in a world always seeking to rob one of what one has & does.
When a society acts in the interest of one another/the whole, rather than self~interest, the commerce system becomes unnecessary, instead an adversary of freedom, leisure & abundance that exists outside of commerce.
